№5 Bad Ischl

Up to the "Burg Wildenstein" – The starting point of the inspiring hike is the valley station of the Katrin cable car. The ruins of the hilltop castle are located in the heart of the Salzkammergut on a rocky outcrop of the Katrin, Bad Ischl's local mountain. From there you have a wonderful view over the valley along the beautiful Traun river. Wildenstein Castle was, alongside the small Pflindsberg Castle, the second of only two castles in the historic Salzkammergut. The first documented mention dates back to 1392. Wildenstein was owned by the Habsburgs from 1419.
A visit to the Rettenbach Gorge is also highly recommended. Through bizarre gorges with the roaring Rettenbach under your feet, up to a meadow where unexpected karst springs await hikers. In several places, water constantly bubbles up from the forest floor as if by magic. This natural spectacle is particularly impressive after rainfall, when the small springs suddenly become a raging stream.
Finally, a little insider tip: “Rührwerk” show bakery in Bad Ischl, ...here you can find the most delicious cream rolls for miles around!
