“Burgau hike with a visit to the Gustav Mahler composing house” – the world-famous composer Gustav Mahler liked to live at Lake Attersee in the 19th century. Gasthof Föttinger and composed his 2nd and 3rd symphonies there. In order to be able to work in complete peace and quiet, his composing cottage was built for him on the lakeside property. From 1893 onwards, Gustav Mahler came here and enjoyed the still untouched nature. In those days, it was certainly quieter around Lake Attersee. In 1983, Mahler's retreat was faithfully renovated and opened to the public.
